'Put your weight on the basket,' I shouted to the others above the noise of the burner. The balloon was now erect – some ninety feet tall.
'OK, passengers on board!' I said, and my three friends clambered over the side of the basket. After briefing them, I applied more heat to the envelope, then tugged the quick release to free the tether. The balloon lifted off gracefully and silently. I squeezed the trigger that fired the burner just enough to carry us safely over the treetops at the far end of the field, then applied a more prolonged burst of heat to make us ascend more rapidly. I glanced back at the field, where Al, Jean-Michel and some curious onlookers were waving farewell.
